We just got back from our camping trip yesterday. It was a real adventure! The first day was really nice the weather was hot (heat index 118) but down at the beach there was a cool breeze and it didn't feel too bad. Our backs hurt from our packs because we had to carry all our own water in. It was only a few miles but it took over an hour and a half because of the sand and everything. Probably about 4 miles. We definitely were on the safe side with water. We could have done with less. Anyways the bugs weren't bad until the sun went down around 9 and the mosquitoes were so thick so we went in our tent and went to bed. We did see the wild horses as we were driving in, we saw about 3 groups of them by the road and off in the distance, unfortunately we didn't take pictures thinking we'd see more. All the day beachers were stopped to see them and it was pretty crowded.
Anyways on the second day we thought we'd hike over to the bay side of the island. There were trees over there's and we thought we'd take a picnic lunch. Well about 10 minutes into our hike we realized how hot it really was and decided it wasn't a good idea. I was getting really over heated and I ran into the ocean (ice cold). So we brought our tent down to the beach (we had to camp in the dunes about 100 yards maybe) to be near the breeze but out of reach of the bugs, mostly biting flies. After getting cooled off and set up we lay down in the tent with our soaking wet clothes and everything, about ten minutes later we heard thunder in then distance. We decided just to be safe we should bring our stuff down and put it in the tent with us. Then after all that it started to get worse and worse and we thought it would be safer up by the dunes. So we ran with all our stuff including our tent back up. At this point it was really starting to rain. We set our tent up again and got inside quickly. The storm went right on top of us and it was so scary. You know how the lightning storms can get. A bolt struck really close to us. We were so scared we were praying and shaking. Plus the weather dropped about 30 degrees and in our soaking wet clothes we were starting to shiver, nothing was dry. once it cleared up we could see more dark clouds in the distance and waited about 2 hours seeing if more was coming. It finally seemed ok at about 6pm, it all started around 1:30, so it was a long ordeal.
We hung up our stuff to dry and had a nice calm few of hours before it started to show signs of storm again. By this point we were almost asleep in our tent. We were both a little panicked imagining a storm like that afternoon, only in the dark! Thankfully johns iPhone worked and we saw the chance of storm was all night and into the morning. We decided that neither of us would sleep at all worrying about it and we started to pack up at 10pm. We knew we had a long hike ahead of us and were praying the storms wouldn't start soon. Thankfully we had less to carry and adrenaline from our fear so we walked fast. We were the only backpackers (crazy enough to still be) around. No one was camping there at all but us. The bugs were so bad on the way out we are now covered in bites. Thankfully we made it and drove all the way home. We did see the horses again on the drive out. We made it home about 4am, and slept all day yesterday.
It was such a crazy trip. We are both so sore. Not as successful as we had hoped but a good story at least. I think next time we'll car-camp.
